Break Old Habits
Our beliefs or memories of experiences comprise everything we believe about the world we live in - they are encoded in our minds. They help create our habits, good or bad.
In the world of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), these beliefs constitute our "map" of reality.
This map begins forming the moment we are born as we begin to collect information from the world around us by using our 5 senses of perception:
1. Sight
2. Smell
3. Taste
4. Feeling (emotional and physical)
5. Hearing
Example: Once we initially learn how to tie a shoe, we don't have to stop and think about it every time, rather we access our memory of "tying".
How great is that? We don't have to relearn or stop and think each time we need to tie our shoe, we already have the knowledge.
We can extrapolate
What is even better is our ability to extrapolate.
Meaning: Once we have learned to tie a shoe, the ability to tie is encoded in our brains, then, when we come to a similar situation, such as tying a ribbon on a gift, we can extrapolate the experience of tying our shoe by accessing our memory and using that knowledge (or mental programming) to accommodate this new task.
Although this is a very simplified example, it carries over into all aspects of our lives.
Transposing information from previous to current situations is an extremely valuable ability, because we are enabled to solve problems of the future using experiences of the past. There is no need to relearn all of the aspects of creating a solution.
Another simple, yet applicable example is: When we are handed a pen to write with, because we already know how to write with a pencil, we simply transfer that knowledge to write with a pen.
Cross Connecting.
These types of cross connections are made all the time in our lives. But a problem arises when our mind makes a less than useful, incorrect or inappropriate connection.
As a child, there may have been a time when you were sad and needed to be consoled. If your mother gave you a cookie to help you feel better, it is very possible, depending on your emotional state at the moment, that your mind makes the cross connection that "eating cookies makes you feel better".

This type of accessing happens in your subconscious, you don't stop and think about eating cookies to feel better, you just do it. There is also the possibility that the pattern might transform into "eating makes me feel better". You may end up wondering why you are unable to stop overeating. As a rule, these automatic reactions serve you very well and help you create pathways to self-improvement.
But sometimes they lead you to unwanted behaviors.
A Smoking
A Overeating
A Procrastination
A Anxiety and Stress
A Phobias
A And many others
The good news is that these unwanted behaviors can be unlearned once you are aware of how powerful the mind is and how it can either work for or against you.
